The great musical forms
Musical form is the organization of discourse in time. It determines how musical ideas succeed, contrast and resolve. Each major period developed its own formal architectures.
Fundamental principle: Every great form creates a tonal tension that awaits resolution. In sonata form, it is T2 at the dominant that demands a return to the tonic. Form is not a container — it is a harmonic force that unfolds through time.
